Baking Tips
Choose bread loaves that are sturdy enough to hold the pasta without breaking
Don't hollow out too much bread - you need structure for the bowl
Brush garlic butter generously for maximum flavor
Pre-bake the bread bowls to ensure they're crispy and won't get soggy
Cook pasta slightly under al dente as it will continue cooking with the hot sauce
Save pasta water - it helps bind the sauce and pasta together
Don't overfill the bowls - leave room for the cheese topping
Serve immediately while the bread is still crispy
Provide spoons and forks for easier eating

4 cloves garlic, minced
17
1/2 pound ground Italian sausage (optional)
18
3 cups marinara sauce
19
1/2 cup red wine (optional)
20
1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
21
1/2 teaspoon dried basil
22
1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes
23
Salt and pepper to taste
24
For Assembly and Garnish:
25
1 cup mozzarella cheese, shredded
26
1/2 cup Parmesan cheese, grated
27
1/4 cup fresh basil leaves, chopped
28
2 tablespoons fresh parsley, chopped
29
Extra virgin olive oil for drizzling
30
Cracked black pepper
31
Red pepper flakes (optional)

Instructions

01
Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Cut the top 1 inch off each bread loaf and set aside. Carefully hollow out the inside of each loaf, leaving about 1/2 inch of bread on the sides and bottom to form bowls.
02
In a small bowl, mix softened butter, minced garlic, parsley, Parmesan cheese, Italian seasoning, salt, and pepper to create garlic butter.
03
Brush the inside and rim of each bread bowl generously with the garlic butter mixture. Brush the cut tops with remaining garlic butter.
04
Place bread bowls and tops on a baking sheet. Bake for 12-15 minutes until golden brown and crispy. Remove and set aside.
05
Meanwhile, bring a large pot of salted water to boil. Cook spaghetti according to package directions until al dente. Reserve 1 cup pasta water, then drain.
06
Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add diced onion and cook for 4-5 minutes until softened. Add minced garlic and cook 1 minute more.
07
If using sausage, add it to the skillet and cook until browned and cooked through, breaking it up with a spoon, about 6-8 minutes.
08
Add marinara sauce, red wine (if using), Italian seasoning, basil, and red pepper flakes. Simmer for 10-12 minutes until sauce thickens slightly.
09
Add cooked spaghetti to the sauce and toss to combine. Add reserved pasta water as needed to achieve desired consistency. Season with salt and pepper.
10
Place each garlic bread bowl on a serving plate. Fill generously with the spaghetti mixture, allowing some pasta to overflow naturally.
11
Top each bowl with shredded mozzarella and grated Parmesan cheese. Return to oven for 3-5 minutes until cheese melts.
12
Garnish with fresh basil, parsley, a drizzle of olive oil, and cracked black pepper. Serve immediately with the garlic bread tops on the side.
